Our work is focused on Sampson County, North Carolina. We focus on those issues that have significant impacts on health, economic outcomes, and quality of life for residents in the county.
We are engaged in scientific research and monitoring, dedicated to advocating for our community’s needs, conducting outreach, and offering educational opportunities to those who would like to learn more about social and environmental justice issues. These research and monitoring projects would not be possible without the generous support and collaboration of our partners!

EJCAN is at the forefront of pioneering air quality research and monitoring efforts in Sampson County, NC. Our team is currently engaged in scientific research initiatives to gather crucial data on overall air quality as well as various specific air pollutants, including:
Particulate Matter (PM1, PM2.5, and PM10)
Hydrogen Sulfide (H2S)
Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2)
Ammonia (NH3)
Bacteria
The ultimate goal of these monitoring efforts is to monitor overall air quality in Sampson County, assess impacts, and evaluate potential health risks to the community.

EJCAN has been engaged in water quality testing and research since our inception. Our water quality testing efforts encompass surface water sampling, biomonitoring surveys, and residential drinking water testing*. We are actively engaged in research and monitoring efforts aimed at collecting data on specific pollutants that pose risks to the health and well-being of our community. These include:
PFAS
Heavy metals
Nitrates
Bacteria

EJCAN is dedicated to community-driven advocacy, ensuring all communities in Sampson County have clean air, water, and soil. A central component of our mission is aimed at addressing environmental injustices that disproportionately affect community members.
At EJCAN, we are dedicated to amplifying awareness of the environmental and social injustices occurring in Sampson County and elevating the voice of rural eastern North Carolina at the local, regional, state, national, and international levels through strategic partnerships. We advocate for policy reforms, mobilize individuals to take action, and pursue justice through many avenues, including litigation and other legal processes. Our advocacy efforts are geared towards fostering systemic change, empowering affected communities, and holding accountable those responsible for environmental harm.
Together with our allies, supporters, and community members, we strive to build a future where environmental justice is not just an aspiration, but a lived reality for all residents of Sampson County and beyond.
